BMC Sickle Cell patient in clinic room and at home

Becoming Her Own Best Advocate: Cloret’s Journey with Sickle Cell Disease

Growing up, Cloret Carl and several of her 11 siblings managed sickle cell disease with little support. One day, she enrolled in a BMC clinical trial and over the next seven years, participated in some version of the trial with good results. She has stuck with BMC ever since. "People come to BMC from all of the world — Brazil, Venezuela, Haiti, the United Arab Emirates — to seek care for sickle cell disease. Beyond the medical treatment and the clinical trials, they tailor a plan to assist you in having a life apart from dealing with illness."

Today, Cloret says her SCD is well-controlled and she hasn't been hospitalized in seven years. BMC's world-renowned experts deliver medical excellence through the latest gene therapies, personalized care, and support beyond compare.

Events

Returning Citizens Panel

Improving the Lives of Returning Citizens, Their Families, and the Broader Community

On September 24, BMC Health System in partnership with Attorney General Andrea Campbell hosted our Returning Citizens Roundtable and Expo to improve the lives of citizens affected by or involved in the criminal justice system. The event brought together thought leaders, advocates, and people with lived experience. A panel discussion moderated by Rev. Willie Bodrick and speakers Mike Curry, Jay Vilar and Carla Monteiro, addressed mental health and barriers to entering the workforce. Additionally, we offered access to vital resources such as housing, employment, financial, and community health services, along with exciting giveaways. See photos from the Returning Citizens Roundtable and Expo event.

Block Party

Supporting Boston-Area Youth at Mattapan’s Deatrich Wise Block Party

BMC is proud to partner with New England Patriots’ Deatrich Wise, and the Boys & Girls Club Boston on the 5th Annual Deatrich Wise Block Party! This free annual event celebrates and uplifts kids, teens, and families in our community. BMC’s dental, behavioral health, and women’s health teams were present to distribute resources and gather invaluable community feedback on how to improve access to care. We were #BMCProud to continue our commitment to intentional community partnership and support an event that gives kids a platform to express themselves. Check out photos from the block party.

In Your Words

It's unavoidably stressful to come in for breast imaging, but the team at Belkin does great work in moving things along efficiently and creating a supportive environment. The technician who performed my mammogram had a great technique for minimizing discomfort and my doctor was super helpful during my follow-up exam and discussion. Thanks to everyone there!

“In Your Words” features patient comments from patient experience outreach surveys. We appreciate your time completing these surveys and for sharing your thoughts with us. The information gathered in these surveys is used to learn where we can improve, to continue to provide exceptional care to all.
