National Recovery Month: Supporting Those Affected by Substance Use Disorders

In honor of Overdose Awareness Day on August 31st, over 22,000 purple flags were planted on the Boston Common, each one in remembrance of a life lost to overdose in Massachusetts between 2012 and 2023.

At BMC, we work every day to improve the lives of people with substance use disorders through expert clinical care, research, education, and policy and advocacy efforts. This National Recovery Month, we not only remember the lives lost to substance use disorder, but also shine a spotlight on the fact that treatment works and that we can help make long-term recovery a reality for individuals and families.

BMC hosts events throughout the month where you can learn, participate, and reflect on ways we all can work to de-stigmatize substance use disorders and normalize treatment.

During construction, all patients and visitors can enter through the Moakley Lobby (830 Harrison Ave), where staff will assist you in reaching your destination. The Emergency Department entrance will remain on Albany St. Please allow extra time to reach your appointment while the Menino and Yawkey entrances are closed. That’s a Wrap on The Second Annual EQTY 2024: Accelerating Health Justice

On September 12, community leaders and health equity experts from across the nation came together to advance racial health equity and ignite positive change at our annual health equity summit, EQTY 2024. A highlight was the keynote address from Pulitzer Prize-winning Nikole Hannah-Jones, creator of the 1619 Project, who stated "Black people don’t just so happen to be more sick than other people. We live in a society that makes us more sick, and if we don’t understand that, then we try to fix Black people instead of the systems and conditions." The address aligned with the theme of reckoning with and working to break the constructs of our country’s past and set the stage for fruitful conversations on topics such as reimagining the role of hospitals to address social determinants of health, workforce development as a pathway to economic mobility, and achieving access to transformational treatments. At BMC, we know health equity is foundational to community wellbeing and requires transformative thinking, which is why we continue to spark important conversations with leaders in healthcare, government, public policy, and business. Flu Season is Here: Get Your Flu Shot

Getting a flu vaccine can help prevent the flu and can help prevent serious illness if you do get the flu. All patients six months and older should get the flu vaccine. It is particularly important for pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions, and children because they are high risk of having serious flu-related complications.

In Your Words

Many years ago, Boston Medical saved my life. When I got to Boston Medical, I was there at the time I was [an addict]. That was years ago. Today, I'm clean and sober. I've been clean for many years after that. But they saved my life there. And I want to say thank you.

“In Your Words” features patient comments from patient experience outreach surveys. We appreciate your time completing these surveys and for sharing your thoughts with us. The information gathered in these surveys is used to learn where we can improve, to continue to provide exceptional care to all.
