BMC Voices: Arminta’s Story of Receiving Groundbreaking Cancer Treatment

Meet Arminta Graham, a BMC patient who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2022. After three rounds of chemotherapy failed to stop her cancer from progressing, BMC offered her another option: CAR T-cell therapy. Arminta ended up becoming the first patient at BMC to receive this lifesaving treatment for lymphoma, and in April 2023, she was declared cancer-free.

“I was very surprised that CAR T was available… right here in our community,” says Arminta. “It was a wonderful thing because it really works. I can’t believe I don’t have cancer today!” Arminta’s story is just one of the many ways BMC is #RewritingHealthcare by making state-of-the-art treatments available to all patients.

TIME Video Features Our Rooftop Farm

Three stories up, on our 2,658 square-foot farm, we grow culturally important crops, such as radishes, peppers, and leafy greens. Not only does the farm produce more than 4,000 pounds of fresh food every year for our patients, but it also benefits the environment by reducing storm water runoff and energy usage.

“We want to make Boston the healthiest urban population in the world," says BMC’s David Maffeo, senior director of support services, who came up with the idea for the farm in 2017.

Honoring Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, last week we hosted a conversation between Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, the first woman of color elected to Congress from the Commonwealth, and Uché Blackstock, MD — a prominent thought leader on bias and racism in healthcare and author of the New York Times best-seller Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine.

The conversation delved into medical racism, key moments in Black history that led to the inequities that exist within the U.S. healthcare system and outlined steps we can all take to address health inequities.
