BMC Voices: Catherine's Story

After a hip replacement at age 59, accomplished rower Catherine Widgery continued to win titles. But at age 69, she started having pain in her other hip and knew she needed a second hip replacement so she could get back on the water.

Catherine, who was treated by Dr. Ayesha Abdeen for her first hip replacement surgery, asked her doctor who the best hip surgeon in Boston is now.

She said, “It's still Dr. Abdeen, and she is 10 years more experienced than she was then. Now she's  chief of hip and knee replacement surgery at Boston Medical Center.” That’s when Catherine knew she would find excellent care at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at BMC.

Reminder: Masking Changes for BMC Patients and Visitors

BMC has changed our policy on mask use in hospital buildings. These changes are being made to protect our patients, visitors, and staff and are similar to updated policies at other hospitals in Boston. Patients and visitors are:

  • Required to wear surgical masks in clinical areas, including inpatient units, outpatient clinics, the Emergency Department, and procedural areas

  • Required to wear masks in all areas of the hospital if they have symptoms of respiratory illnesses, including a cough, fever, runny nose, or shortness of breath, even if they have tested negative for COVID-19

In addition, BMC employees are required to wear masks in all clinical areas, including an N95 mask when caring for a patient with COVID-19. Masks will be available at all entrances. We appreciate your cooperation and help in keeping everyone in the BMC community safe. If you have any questions, please visit our COVID-19 information page
