BMC Study Finds Individualized Assessments Reduce CPS Reports for Infants with Prenatal Substance Exposure |

A new study led by Rohan Khazanchi, MD, MPH found that a trauma-informed clinical guideline can help reduce reflexive Child Protective Services (CPS) reporting without compromising child safety. The study, published in Pediatrics, suggests that evaluating each family’s circumstances before filing a report for an infant with prenatal substance exposure can reduce reporting by 50%, without affecting the proportion of infants safely discharged home with their families.

Name: Ashish Verma, MBBS
Department: Nephrology
Research Focus: I study the intersection of cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic diseases. A lot of people in the U.S. are affected by these three comorbidities, and I want to show the burden of these diseases and the factors that we can control to reduce this burden for our patients.
Why BMC: I was on a special type of J-1 visa when I came to the U.S. from India, which meant I had to work in a city that supported underserved populations. During my fellowship, I met Dr. Sus Waikar, who is now Chief of Nephrology at BMC, and he mentioned that BMC had a spot for someone with a J-1 visa. It felt like a great fit because I really wanted to work in a hospital that cared for a diverse patient population with a wide range of pathologies.
