New BMC Study Finds Hepatitis C Virus Testing Guidelines Tied to
Increased Screening for Pregnant Women
Researchers at BMC, led by Rachel Epstein, MD, found that nationally, both pregnant people and non-pregnant females were tested more for hepatitis C virus (HCV) after national screening
guidance was released, with pregnant people being tested nearly twice as much as before. However, only 39% of pregnant people and 9% of non-pregnant females had ever been tested during the study period, falling short of recommended guidelines.

Name: Manu Thakral, NP, PhD Department: Nursing Research Focus: I'm interested in studying how different models of patient care impact health systems and patient outcomes in real-world healthcare settings. Why BMC: BMC has never had a nurse scientist before, and the hospital’s patient population has historically been underrepresented in research. I want to fill that gap and elevate nursing research to understand this population.
