This Month's Featured Director |
Manish Sagar, MD
Associate Director, Basic and Pre-Clinical Research |
As the Associate Director for Basic and Pre-Clinical Research at Boston Medical Center, I am excited to promote BMC’s research mission. My goal is to facilitate innovative pre-clinical / basic science biomedical research that maximizes and strengthens BMC resources to advance scientific research with the greatest impact for our patients. We aim to achieve the full potential of the highly talented pool of researchers and research laboratories at BMC. We are working to modernize our existing research infrastructure. For instance, we are updating essential research equipment, such as autoclaves and water purifiers, in our basic science laboratories. We are also exploring ways to secure federal and non-federal funding that will support modernization and improvement of our existing basic and pre-clinical research infrastructure. We are streamlining processes that allow teams to incorporate new researchers; this will promote talent development and procurement. We are enhancing ways to access existing and new resources, such as computing, bioinformatics, and biological samples, required for state of the art basic and pre-clinical research. In aggregate, I am inspired to lead BMC’s research mission to improve health outcomes especially in disease areas that disproportionately affect our patient population. |

Research Education |
Training and Education Opportunities and Development |
Research Operations is developing education opportunities and partnering with BMC/BUMC's Clinical Research Resources Office (CRRO) to identify their monthly and quarterly series. As trainings become available, we will add them to the research community calendar or library. |
This month, the Clinical Trial Office (CTO) launches a year-long training series on Clinical Research Billing and Finance (CRBF). Research Operations will send out a Zoom meeting request for each session. Investigators, administrators, and study team members are all invited to attend. If you have not received a meeting request for the May sessions below, please contact the CTO to be added to its distribution group. |
The Basics: Research Billing Compliance
The first offering of the CRBF series is a primer on the federal research-specific billing rules that govern BMC’s Clinical Research (CR) process and the reasons why process compliance is crucial. This presentation reprises the content of the February 2024, CR Seminar sponsored by BMC/BUMC’s CRRO. Learning objectives:
-
Identify basic research billing compliance (RBC) requirements
-
Recognize the range of studies subject to RBC requirements, and
-
Understand the role of RBC in participant and provider protections
The Process: Research Billing and Finance
Second in the CRBF series is an overview of the many-stepped process required to operationalize federal rules. This presentation reprises the content of the CRRO's March 2024, CR Seminar. Subsequent monthly CTO sessions will focus on individual steps in the process. Learning objectives:
- Describe the front-to-back end process required to protect participants and BMC
- Discuss the crucial roles of timely, thorough internal budgeting, Velos-CT visit logging, and charge reconciliation
- Explain how to reach out to the Clinical Trial Office staff with any questions or concerns.

Research Contracts & Industry Agreements (RCIA):
RCIA is responsible for drafting, reviewing, and negotiating research and programmatic contracts. RCIA’s portfolio includes Clinical Trial Agreements, Programmatic Service and Research Funding Agreements, and non-funded agreements such as Data Use Agreements and Material Transfer Agreements. RCIA also provides guidance and support to BMC researchers seeking to engage in collaborative or sponsored research with external academic, non-profit, and industry partners.
Research Support Services (RSS):
RSS provides strategic input, coordination, supervision and operational oversight, and fiscal responsibility for all of BMC’s shared research Cores and Platforms including Shared Services that support research. In addition, RSS is developing a centralized support services strategy, initially aimed at providing PI-centric post award financial management support to partnering departments and PIs. The initial phase will be a small test phase starting summer 2024.
Foundation Relations and Government Grants (FRGG):
FRGG strategizes with investigators and teams to maximize competitiveness for research funding. As vital members of the BMC research community, we accelerate the growth of research through collaboration with BMC investigators to craft compelling research proposals responsive to funder priorities. FRGG helps teams and individual researchers amplify their research by becoming more effective communicators, grant writers, and advocates. We activate and lead teams around emerging research opportunities, many of which are large-scale and span scientific disciplines, clinical and administrative departments, and institutions.
FRGG’s continuum of grant-seeking services for government grants and foundation-funded research grants ranges from identifying, reviewing, analyzing, and disseminating funding opportunities to cultivating relationships with investigators, internal and external collaborators, and funders. We partner with investigators on all facets of proposal development, from idea generation through submission, with a special emphasis on helping you navigate the BMC institutional landscape to ensure your research is designed to succeed. Please connect with us if you have any questions.
Research Informatics (RI):
RI provides the infrastructure and analytics to drive BMC’s research data strategy. RI also administers the BMC Clinical Data Warehouse for Research (CDW-R), a core facility that extracts data from health system data warehouses on behalf of researchers. CDW-R services include research data sets extractions, medical record pre-screens and prospective recruitment lists, retrospective cohort identification, and simple counts for study cohort estimations.
