This Month's Featured Director

Asa Lopatin

Director, Research Contracts & Industry Agreements

As the Director of Research Contracts & Industry Agreements, I am responsible for developing sustainable systems and processes to support the management of research-related contracts on behalf of Boston Medical Center. My goal is to make the BMC contracting process as user-friendly as possible while continuing to protect the best interests of the institution, its staff, and its patients. To that end, I am working to implement a new intake and tracking system for all contract negotiations that will provide greater clarity on points of contact in Research Operations and increased transparency into negotiation timelines. In recent months, we have made great progress reducing the duration of negotiations and providing timely information to BMC stakeholders. As we continue to gather useful data, we will identify further opportunities to develop additional training, resources, and workflow refinements. What initially inspired me to come to BMC was the organization’s goal of making world class health care and research participation opportunities more accessible. BMC serves an incredibly diverse patient population with a dynamic workforce, whose empathy and dedication make the provision of excellent care and the performance of cutting edge research possible.

What Researchers Need to Know About Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Programs

In response to the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 and federal research agency policies, BMC is updating its Conflict of Commitment policy (Policy# 09.23.010) to contain a prohibition, regardless of sources of funding, against researchers’ participation in Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Programs (MFTRPs), and clarifies that any participation in a Foreign Talent Recruitment Program (FTRP) must be disclosed to BMC and to research sponsors, as required by sponsor.

Broadly, a “Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Program" is a program that attempts to unethically or unlawfully acquire U.S. scientific-funded research or technology through government-run or funded recruitment programs sponsored by or based in a country of concern that target scientists, engineers, academics, researchers, and entrepreneurs of all nationalities working or educated in the United States.

Strategic Research Growth (SRG):

SRG strategizes with investigators and teams to maximize competitiveness for research funding. As vital members of the BMC research community, we accelerate the growth of research through collaboration with BMC investigators to craft compelling research proposals responsive to funder priorities. SRG helps teams and individual researchers amplify their research by becoming more effective communicators, grant writers, and advocates. We activate and lead teams around emerging research opportunities, many of which are large-scale and span scientific disciplines, clinical and administrative departments, and institutions.

SRG’s continuum of grant-seeking services for government grants and foundation-funded research grants ranges from identifying, reviewing, analyzing, and disseminating funding opportunities to cultivating relationships with investigators, internal and external collaborators, and funders. We partner with investigators on all facets of proposal development, from idea generation through submission, with a special emphasis on helping you navigate the BMC institutional landscape to ensure your research is designed to succeed. Please connect with us!
