Research Matters | Furthering Scientific Innovation and Discovery

Volume 10 |  December 2023

Dear Research Community:

As the year draws to a close, we reflect on a busy 2023! Despite the challenges, setbacks, and the whirlwind of activity, we have navigated through a busy year filled with milestones and collaborative endeavors that have propelled BMC's research to new heights.

We are excited to share a glimpse into the significant milestones that have defined our collective journey throughout the past twelve months. Most notably, 2023 has seen the groundbreaking of a dedicated clinical research space at BMC, to be completed in Fall, 2024, and the establishment of the new BMC Office of Research, led by the inaugural Chief Scientific Officer, Megan Bair-Merritt, M.D.

Funding Opportunities
NIH Grant Investments
Upcoming Trainings
Career Opportunities
Professional Meetings

On the Research Operations side, we continue to strengthen our infrastructure by investing in dedicated resources, including the creation of a new position to improve agreement negotiations, review and execution turnaround times. Rounding out the year is the hiring of the new Director of Sponsored Programs Administration, who will join BMC in early January, 2024, and Director of Research Support Services, also joining our team in January.

Thank you for your hard work, commitment, and passion that have made this year in research truly extraordinary.

Wishing you a happy and restful holiday season!

Thank you,

Tina & Megan

The MA Department of Public Health (DPH) Applications

The MA Department of Public Health (DPH) is accepting applications from researchers to conduct an analysis of voluntary versus involuntary treatment for substance use disorder and the outcomes of fatal and nonfatal opioid-related overdose, controlling for other factors, using the Public Health Data Warehouse dataset. Analyses are intended to generate insights on the prescribing and treatment history, including court-ordered treatment or treatment within the criminal legal system, of persons in the Commonwealth. Successful applicants will be required to contribute analyses for the DPH. There is no funding associated with this call for applications.

Please click here for the full Notice of Opportunity (BD-24-1031-OFFIC-OPH-95901). Applications are due to DPH.PHD@mass.gov via email no later than December 29, 2023 at 5 p.m. Successful applicants are granted access to data to complete their proposed analytic plans and will be required to sign a Data Use Agreement (DUA) before contributing analyses for the DPH to use in its reporting. Questions related to the DUA and intellectual property should be directed to otd@bu.edu and DUA.MTARequest@bmc.org at the time of selection.

About the BU-BMC Summer Science Scholars Program

If you’ve never worked in a research lab and you aren’t close to someone who has, you’d likely have a number of questions: What is day-to-day life like for a scientist? How do scientists think and act? What do scientists look like, and could I see myself becoming one?

Tina DaSilva recently sat down with Elliott Hagedorn, PhD, Gwen Beacham, PhD Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Zewde Ingram, PhD student, and Khaliun Enkhbayar, Research Associate of the Hagedorn lab to learn about the BU-BMC Summer Science Scholars program – a program designed to help answer the above questions for local high school students.
